About

Gender: Male, neutered
Age: 13 years
Weight: 19 lbs
Breed: Patterdale Terrier mix
Color: Black and brown, rough/mixed coat type

Shotgun is 13 year old Patterdale Terrier mix. He is neutered, heartworm negative, and up-to-date on vaccines and monthly preventatives.

Shotgun might be 13 years old but he has some pent up energy that he needs to get out of his chamber! We are hoping that his recent neuter will help even out his energy levels and help with his manners. Prior to his surgery, we were seeing his energy levels outpace his body.

A great example of this is when Shotgun plays fetch with his guardian, his desire to continue the game is often more than his body can handle. To help him use his energy in more productive ways, we recommend introducing Shotgun to enrichment activities - such as kongs, snuffle mats, tug toys, to name a few. These are great tools that mentally stimulate and engage dogs to give them an outlet for their excess energy.

If you are unfamiliar with Patterdale Terriers, here's some of the highlights. Patterdales are a hunting breed which is a type of working dog. With his strong prey drive Shotgun is no exception. At nearly 20 lbs when he wants to chase birds, or other small animals, he can be a lot to handle on the leash.

Shotgun will need behavior training as he has forgotten his manners. He has been known to jump on people when he is excited. He is strong dog, his jump can bowl you over if you are not prepared. For this reason, we think he would do better in a home without small children or cats. He would be fine as an only dog, he could also have doggie siblings with appropriate introductions.

While Patterdale Terriers are known for being independent, they also like to relax and cuddle. Shotgun would like to join you on the couch for a cuddly, relaxing time. He will also hang out in his crate, he is more likely to happily relax if he has the opportunity to get his energy out first.

Shotgun is ready for a family who can provide positive reinforcement training, exercise, and structure. As a working breed, he is built for that. While he is a senior, as a higher energy dog he would be ideal for an active person or family. He'd love to have someone who is often home who can engage with him throughout the day.

Shotgun would be most successful in a home without small children or cats. He would be fine as an only dog, he could also have doggie siblings with appropriate introductions. He'd enjoy having a yard for sniffing. He may be a candidate for those without a yard if the adopter is committed exercising him.
