Gidget is a 5 year old, 4 lb, chihuahua and yorkie mix. She is up-to-date on her monthly preventatives and vaccines. She is heartworm negative and spayed.
Gidget sweet and clever dog who loves people. She is sassy and isn't afraid to remind you how stubborn and creative Chi/Yorkies can be. Gidget's background is interesting, she is a dog from the hoarding situation. However, she was a personal pet, unlike the majority of the dogs. She clearly had some house training and other basic command training.
Gidget loves people, she would love to be on your lap all the time. She is willing to share your lap with another dog. she does great with other small dogs, she isn't super playful but seems to enjoy their company. While she will try and con you into carrying her, she actually enjoys going on walks and she is most likely to do her business on a walk - generally in the middle of the sidewalk. Don't let her small size fool you, she now goes on two to three 15-40 minute walks daily with her foster sibling. She is doing well with house training and is working on using potty pads in the house.
Gidget is so clever that she will try and wait you out to see if you will cave or if you will actually make her follow through. At first Gidget was reluctant to show her foster that she was actually leash and harness trained. Much less that she would go potty while on a walk.
Turns out Gidget also knows the commands for "sit" and "lay down" - she does best if you use a hand signal with it. She seems to know the cue "settle" and the instruction "go to bed" - does she want to follow instructions all the time - no. But she is capable and if you hold her to her training, she will do them. Gidget is as stubborn as she is smart, she learned the command "touch" from her foster sibling. She prefers it over "come" and it has worked well to pivot her from barking when she is startled.
Due to her size, Gidget will often alert bark when she is startled. It is very rarely a mean bark and is most likely to happen if you wake her up from a nap. Gidget has met children, she tends to move away from them and give them space. Gidget does not enjoy being left at home, she has many big feelings about it, and is likely to loudly howl her displeasure.
Gidget has 9 teeth, including a very sweet snaggle-tooth. She eats softened dry food with wet food mixed in. Gidget is very food motivated which is great for reinforcing training, she does need softer treats due to her teeth.
Gidget's ideal home would have one or more people, preferably at least one person who is home the majority of the time. She would do well in an adult-only home or one with dog-savvy older children. While she could be a solo dog, she gets confidence from having other similar sized dogs around and having one or more small fur-siblings would be preferable. Due to her vocal range, we do not recommend that she live somewhere with shared walls.
